I hear Steve Khan from the 70's and want to start by saying that consistency has always been the best of its virtues. Brilliant musician, composer and writer of books, with the guitar hero of them, Steve belongs to that select group of musicians who do what they want, regardless of "recommendations" of any record. In the past, has collaborated in studio or live with groups like Weather Report, Steely Dan, Blood Sweat & Tears or CBS All Stars, and also with other musicians or performers, always first class, as Hubert Laws, Billy Cobh, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Franks, Billy Joel and James Brown, among others. He also belonged to renowned contemporary jazz bands as Eyewitness (Steve Jordan, Anthony Jackson and Manolo Badrena), Elements (Bill Evans, Gil Goldstein and Clifford Carter) and Caribbean Jazz Project (Dave Samuels and Dave Valentin).
Now, Steve Khan has published "Parting Shot", a treatise on Latin jazz without caring at all that the electric guitar has never been a key instrument in this style. The repertoire of the disc. consists of his own compositions, which must be added "Blues Connotation" and "Chronology, both Ornette Coleman and" Bye-Ya "Thelonious Monk. With warm and unmistakable sound of his guitar, it acquires a logical role but, at all, "drowned" by other musicians involved in "Parting Shot", all outstanding and whose names are well known: Anthony Jackson (bass), Dennis Chambers (drums) and Manolo Badrena, Mark Quinones and Bobby Allende on percussion. Giving the feeling of a group "solid" and seamless, Steve Khan was able to develop with the group, his particular dream of making a full concept album dedicated to jazz and Latin with a tradition of this style but with modern design.
